One thing I am really passionate about is encouraging others to pursue their passions, face their fears and live a life that they are excited to wake up to every day. I feel grateful to have been given opportunities over the past few years to be able to mentor and speak to photographers at all levels in their creative journey about how to be better artists & business people. And in the process I grown and learned a great deal about myself.

When I was approached by the folks over at HER Photography Conference about being a keynote speaker at the HER conference I sort of broke out in cold sweats, my hands got all clammy and I successfully avoided returning their call for a good week or so. As much as I love speaking life into people, I've never thought of myself as a "keynote speaker." The term sounds so fancy and my mind immediately went to Steve Jobs when he gives his Keynote presentations for Apple. eek! However, once Chris talked me down off the ledge and I accepted the opportunity, I really started to get excited about rubbing shoulders with a group of such talented women and sharing some of what I have learned along the way.

I would love to hear from you on what topics you might like to hear me speak on, I've got a couple hours to fill with good quality content ;), so please fire away in the comment section if you have any thoughts on content/questions etc.

Registration opens tomorrow and you can find out more info by visiting the HER Conference Website or the HER Conference Facebook Page

I LOVE this! I'm so excited for you and it is so inspiring to me, as a female photographer, to see so much success here.
I would love to hear about how you approach different sessions, your mindset. How your faith plays in to your business and how you work.
That's what I can think of for now... I'm sure I'll have more questions.. :)

I desperately want to go to a small conference like this, but as part of a husband/wife full time team, I feel like it wouldn't suit my needs as well. Is there a married-team oriented conference/workshop/retreat that you know of, or could you be inspired to partner with some of the greats and host one?

sarahrhoads says: Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 12:22 PM

@Jenna Yes! It will be much smaller than WPPI (especially considering it is just women) :) There is a wide variety of speakers on the panel all covering different topics for women with a camera!

Jenna says: Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 10:33 AM

This event sounds awesome! I'm curious, is this going to be focused on shooting, marketing your business or what? Is it a smaller scale WPPI? I couldn't get the feel from reading through the site.

During our workshop in Australia, we did a mini shoot that was about 15-20 minutes with this fabulous couple, Lana & Frank. They were kind enough to put their love on display in front of all of our attendees which takes a great deal of courage, so I really have to commend them for being open to the experience.

These two were so wonderful to photograph. When I asked Lana what her favorite thing was about Frank she said she loves his sense of humor. And when I asked Frank the same question he said how much he loves Lana's laugh. It was adorable to see that in action. Lana would just light up when Frank would look at her a certain way and her laugh was effervescent. I love that I am able to peek into these sacred moments in peoples lives. I still have to pinch myself that I get to do a job where I am paid to capture those cherished and beautiful parts of people. What an honor it is. Every day I wake up feeling grateful to do what I do.

**Also, for those who took part in the Self Portrait Project last year I will be collecting some more photos of everyones self portraits for another post around Christmas this year so get your self portraits ready and you can submit your images to selfportrait@sarahrhoads.com sized at 550 high untagged and in the email provide me with a link to your site. Please submit them no later than December 15th**

I recently found out that Australia is NOT the grueling 30 hour flight I was told it was, so it's time to plan a trip there! I might be a bummed ball of goo after 20 but it's not 30!

We hoped on a plane on Sunday morning and ended up in the land of OZ on Tuesday. Yes, we time traveled. It was a long flight but worth every moment of being stuffed in the middle seat for 20-something hours :) Chris and I had the opportunity to meet some of the most beautiful and inspiring people at our workshop in Australia a few weeks ago. It was such an exhilarating experience. I feel like I grew more than I ever thought possible right along with 17 of my new friends. I am so so grateful to my friend Christine Pobke for making all of this happen. She emailed me over a year ago telling us we should come do a workshop in Australia.  She promised to pull everything together and work out all the details on the ground floor. We had received e mails like this before, but for some reason her note just connected with me. It was like I knew in my heart we were supposed to be there.

The beautiful attendees truly changed my life. It was an absolutely INCREDIBLE group of people. All of which are very talented photographers that came from all over the be a part. I was truly humbled. At the welcome dinner I looked around the room at all these beautiful faces and I literally just started crying. I was overwhelmed with how these incredibly talented people would want to come and hear from us. It was such a testament to what happens when you follow your passion... doors open, people come and love wins. My life was changed from my new Aussie (and American) friends who came out.

And a HUGE thank you to my amazing friend Samm Blake who was a guest speaker for us at the workshop... she is just utterly lovely in more ways than I can begin to count.

A couple of attendees wrote some little reflections on their blog that you can check out here:

We are so very excited to announce VOICE, a workshop with Chris and me in Australia this year!

About four months ago we were contacted by a beautiful photographer, Christine Pobke, from Australia who was interested in hosting us for a workshop in her hometown of Canberra, Australia. From the moment Christine emailed I felt like we were kindred spirits, and we couldn't be happier to link arms with such a fabulous person & photographer as our host.

We are so passionate about sharing with and encouraging photographers to find their own unique voice as artists and business owners.  It is our belief that everyone has a unique message and voice to share with the world.  Most times, it is just a matter of finding it. Our VOICE workshop will be an experience rich in life, love, photography, inspiration, exploration and creativity.

The concept behind VOICE centers around finding your unique voice as an artist, developing a market niche, staying inspired, being remarkable for your clients, and building a brand experience. VOICE stands for Vision, Openness, Inspiration, Creativity & Experience. During our time together we will dig into developing personal vision, voice, inviting your clients to a space of openness, building a brand experience, and creating work that you are excited & passionate about. We will be covering a variety of topics such as:

  • Finding your VOICE as an artist
  • Shooting
  • Interacting with and posing clients
  • Chemistry with Clients
  • Marketing
  • Building a brand experience
  • Post Processing
  • Pricing
  • Setting up creative shoots
  • making time to shoot for yourself
  • Managing client expectations
  • Blogging
  • Working with available light
  • Workflow
  • Staying Inspired, fresh & Creative
  • Being Remarkable for your clients

*During our time together, Chris and I have a shoot planned where you will be able to watch and see us in action. This will be an opportunity to see how we work in different environments, interact with our couples, and the "behind the scenes" of how we do what we do.
