Moab, Utah is rocking my world.

I'm here with some of my girlfriends who also all happen to be photographers from all over. We pick a random city every year to go to and just spend time together, close up our shops for a week, bond and just take photos for ourselves.

oh. and we ride in hummers on big rocks.... more of that to come but you can check out the trip blog where some of us have been keeping up with our trip.... despite horrible wifi and cell service (which I think is a weird blessing in disguise).

We're staying in a giant cabin in the middle of nowhere that sleeps 20. It has taxidermy everywhere... it creeps me out a little bit but other than that the place is pretty sweet.

i. love. this. place.

i. love. my beautiful friends.

here is just a few....

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.  He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him." - Henry David Thoreau

Today we got on a plane and headed out to upstate New York to stay in a beautiful cabin nestled on a lake with some great friends of ours, Mark & Candice. Although we just arrived this afternoon I already feel my body tuning into relaxation mode. I also swallowed a bug today, which officially makes me ten times the outdoors-woman I was when I arrived. We have been living in comfy thai pants, embracing no make up, no twitter, no facebook and just being with one another, reading and chillaxing.

I read the quote above the other day in a book I am reading and highlighted it and have continued to come back to it. I love Thoreau's perspective on life, simplicity, and pursuing dreams with no apologies. There is such a truth in the "invisible boundary" that is broken when we step confidently toward our dreams. Thinking a lot about this quote recently and just wanted to share...

How serendipitous that you post this, Sarah, as I'd just been thinking about the ideas Walden expresses here. Love how life works sometimes. Enjoy your vacation and thanks for the great post.

HDT has always been my #1 hero. Love his embrace of the simple life. What book are you reading with this quote? I'm about to start another biography on him.

I love this quote. It was kind of what gave me the kick in the pants to get started and pursue photography. It was the first thing I posted on my blog.

Momentum is the fuel that feeds growth and forward movement.
With momentum a small running-back can break through a 300lb line-backer.
Momentum is what fuels our motivation.
Momentum is what gives a runner the power to finish out the final miles of the race.

Life has been on overdrive for us recently and it has made me think a lot about the idea of momentum. What is it? How do we attain it & how do we foster it?

Isn't it strange to think that the times we are the busiest are to be the times that we get the most accomplished? It seems it would be the other way around. However, when we have the most to do, we also have the FIRE & HUSTLE that it takes to get it all done. With all of our travels, shooting and upon trying to get moved into our new place there are moments when it has felt quite daunting. There seems to always be an overwhelming list, but one practice that I have found that feeds my momentum, is to take pride in the little wins. Focusing on the one thing that I am doing at that very moment, rather than getting overwhelmed by looking at everything helps me be more effective and somehow get it all done. I have found that the way to build momentum is to get something done and then move onto the next thing. Being stuck on endless projects is never fun, nor is it productive or helpful for anyone. So I take some sound advice from a book I read last year called Getting Things Done, by David Allen; I define my actionable items into outcomes and concrete next steps and then... I act!  I take the small victories in stride and take one project at a time. It's a practice that has really helped me keep momentum and has allowed me to feel creative energy despite my long list of 'to-do's.' If you haven't read Allen's book, I highly recommend it, it is a bit of a dry read at times, but it has some glorious little tid-bits of goodness that will help any small business owner stay on top of it all and keep their momentum.

I have quite a bit to process right now in terms of images, but today I just wanted to do a post for myself and share some shots of our recent travels. Happy Monday!

Thanks for the inspiration and affirmation Sarah. I've quickly become a fan of your work from a photographer friend of mines, Elton Anderson. We seem to have this same conversation every 3 months or so when we both become overwhelmed.

Very well said. I'm taking note of this post for sure. It's a great reminder for those of us who are hard workers...to be soft on ourselves and just slow down for long enough to see what we have accomplished. Thank you so much for slowing down yourself long enough to put yourself out there in a way that serves others!!! You and Chris are doing wonderful work and you both inspire me.
