"No, life cannot be understood flat on a page. It has to be lived; a person has to get out of his head, has to fall in love, has to memorize poems, has to jump off bridges into rivers, has to stand in an empty desert and whisper sonnets under his breath... We get one story, you and I, and one story alone." - Donald Miller

New Zealand felt like cracking open a good book. We got a week to ourselves with nothing but the open road, a few maps, our thoughts and each other. This magical little island reminded me to look up at God and smile more. It reminded me that life is about so much more than being tapped into social media and my email that never stops 'bing'ing' at me. It reminded me to look over at my husband and give him more spontaneous big wet kisses. It was a place that put me back in touch with how minor I am in the big scheme of it all. How I am merely a tree in a forest of other wonderful beautiful big giant growing trees. Traveling always has a way of doing that. That is one of the major reasons why I need it so much in my life.

I also became very aware of the reality that apparently God made a few too many sheep amidst this whole "creating the world" thing and somehow they all ended up on the South Island of New Zealand. We're talking sh*t tons of sheep. straight up ridiculous amounts of sheep. I also learned how to say "Fish n' Chips" with a New Zealand accent. Just pretend you are an Aussie and then put a sock in your mouth and say Fish n' Chips and you've got a Kiwi accent. I learned that the people in New Zealand are some of the kindest in all the land; and that people are EXTRA nice to you in a vintage kombi. I also discovered my heaven is part New Zealand. yep. that's right, it is hands down the most beautiful place I have ever been in all my life. I am not a landscape photographer, I like people, so I do this resplendent little island no justice in the picturesque department, so I will just leave it at this.... you must go for yourself and experience what a touch of heaven on earth is like.

Also, please show a bit of extra grace on me in this set.. my hair is a wreck and I sort of always look like I have that "I just rolled out of bed look," I guess that's kind of charming, but only for about two seconds. Just think, if you hadn't showered in 4 days, wouldn't your hair be a wreck too? ;)

You look pretty darn hot for not showering 4 days.

I love your thoughts on feeling small when you travel. It's exactly what I'm feeling now.

I couldn't stop thinking about everything you told me about New Zealand the other morning. How it is the most beautiful place on earth. Once we parted ways we found a overlook of Seattle and the snow capped mountains and I breathed it in and felt overwhelmed knowing that there is so much more beauty than this. You captured New Zealand in a way that calms my desires and eagerly makes me want to pack my bags and buy a ticket. You experienced it in an amazing raw way and I am so happy you two got to do that! High fives to Chris for driving! This place really does look like heaven.

Yesterday I sat down with me, myself and I and reflected on 2010 and attempted to scribble down some goals for 2011. What an incredible year it has been for us. We continue stand humbled and in awe of the vehicle our cameras have been to transport us around the world. Our lenses have been graced by the beauty of Greece, New York (twice), Banff, Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Vegas; Maryland, Idaho, Chicago; Moab, Utah; Durango, CO; Oklahoma; Maui (twice); Rhode Island; Oregon; & California more times than we can count.

This year we became proud first time home buyers and we were glowing as we picked up the keys to our first home together here in Seattle. We hosted our first international workshop in Australia. The Smilebooth took her maiden voyage with us this year and has become a fun little part of our family. We won some cool awards for our work this year and have some weddings featured in some rad magazines in the coming months, so look out on the stands. We took on a new fantastic intern, Dorothy & have another one (Asharae) joining the fam in January. Although I didn't reach my goal of reading 40 books this year, I did read close to 30... which I can still be proud of, after all, it's not quantity it's quality eh? (at least that's what I keep telling myself) ;)

One of my favorite parts about this year has been how we were intentional about carving out time for our personal projects. It's the first year we have made an intentional effort to shoot for ourselves even when we are too busy to think straight. It has truly increased my quality of life and challenged me in ways I didn't think possible. I am so insanely grateful for the doors this year has opened to us and the beautiful people we have met along the way. Most times I catch myself pinching myself amidst it all. I don't take a lick of it for granted. I know what it is like to be in a job that doesn't feed the soul, to sit in a cube and feel trapped with a little light at the end of the tunnel. I was there just a handful of years ago. So I try to remain in state of awe, understanding that my life is a great gift of immense grace. Chris and I work very hard and pull lots of 80+ hour weeks, but that by no means means we deserve anything in this life. Each day is a gift from God. Each person that I call a friend is a gift, each day I get to pick up my camera, a gift; each of my wonderful blog readers is a gift. I mean that. Your words and support are incredible to us, so Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To our wonderful clients who have made this year spectacular for us... Thank YOU. You are just plain incredible people. We love each of you to pieces. Thank you for always trusting us and for being ridiculously amazing. So we bid you adieu 2010!

here are a handful of random shots from 2010 in no particular order I can't do these "favorites and best-of" lists so I just chose at random :) looking forward to another year where I stand amazed in 2011!

So we're going to pick right up where we left off yesterday with the Self Portrait Project... some more amazing shots coming your way today from some fantastic artists from all over the world. I was in awe of so many of these. A huge thank you to everyone who shared, I love being a part of such an inspiring community of artists. These images are thought provoking, beautiful and honest. I hope that many of you will keep up with this project through the year. I stood totally mesmerized by Hayley Clayton's image #86, the mystery, the depth. And Katie Kolenberg had us perplexed by this first image, it's totally captivating and interesting. I could go on and on about so many of these but I'll let the images speak for themselves. Also, I found my husband, Chris' twin through this project... #88 Brad Trone. It looks like they could be identical twins. Brad- were you two separated at birth? please confirm ;)

I am so blown away by the self-portraits that came in this year for The Self Portrait Project. Some of the stories that came along with these images were equally empowering and inspiring. In my opinion, the best self portraits are ones that feel so honest it hurts. It was so beautiful to see that kind of vulnerable authnenticity in so many of these frames. One of the images that really spoke to me was Stephanie Dana's image (#41) It is an image of her sobbing, real tears rolling down her face... with her image she wrote about how she lost her father this year and how difficult that struggle has been for her. I really have to take my hat off to her. Shooting an image like that and being willing to share it with strangers takes a great deal of courage & strength. Thank you to each of you for being courageous enough to put yourselves out there. We have decided to divide this post into TWO PARTS since there were so many images so stay tuned for more tomorrow. I feel like I know each of you a little better and I hope you know your self a little better too.
