Tonight I was prepping my notes for a speech I am giving at a conference for photographers on Tuesday. As I was going through some of my favorite books looking for some of my reference notes I found this beautiful quote that I had underlined just about two years prior. It impacted me so much then and when I read it again tonight, it had the same profound effect on me. So much so that I felt more than compelled to share it here tonight along with an image that was taken earlier this week.

Nelson Mandela is reported to have addressed these words of Marianne Williamson's to the world at large.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented,
       and fabulous -
Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people
Won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone,
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
Give other people permission to do the same.
- Marianne Williamson

Hey I really enjoyed your photographs! I especially like your blog's layout. Very attractive and easy to use.

Perhaps the Law of Attraction may have to do with how I somehow ended up here in your blog...and what a gem! I am at a fork in the road, wanting but hesitant...scared? so much...but just the thought is exhilarating...thank you for this. Thank you.

Kat Harris says: Thursday, November 3, 2011, 11:36 AM

The idea that truly embracing who you are as a person and 'not shrinking back' is so freeing. That actually when I am most myself I am allowing others to be the most that they are as well.

Somehow, I'd never seen or heard the 2nd part of that quote, and that's the part that makes my heart race a little bit faster. The 1st paragraph alone always sounded was intimidating and confusing, the 2nd is inspirational and exciting, to me, personally. Thank you for sharing.

This past year of life would be best compared to being in some weird time warp where time moves at the speed of light and I wake up another year older. Twenty-six has been a year full of a lot of wonderful surprises. This year has required stepping out in faith & being brave. I learned so much about myself.... & yet, I know I still have SO much left to learn.

This morning I came home from yoga to find the sweetest gift on my doorstep from my best friend, Jenice, it was a hand-crafted poster of 27 reasons turning 27 is awesome. The ones that rang the most true, "you own going to bed earlier" & "you are at the prime of your life." Can't wait for what this next year of life has in store!

A few things I am thankful to have learned from my 26 year old self:

- Hard work pays off... continue to do the work now & reap the benefits later.

- ANYTHING is possible.

- I could listen to Ellie Goulding on repeat for weeks & never get sick of her music.

- The best version of me is reached by breaking out of my comfort zone & becoming extremely comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown.

- I have to be intentional about creating space in my life to welcome new opportunities.

- You don't need a ton of friends, just a few really amazing friends that you can count on when push comes to shove.

- I am much more than just what I do.

- When you finally commit yourself to the path you know you are supposed to be on doors will open in the most surprising places.

- Inspiration comes when I have dumped my mind of all of the un-necessary BS.

- Life & Photography is ALL about problem solving & there is ALWAYS a solution, it's my responsibility to find that solution.

- Never listen to the nay-sayers. Thankfully, those people are full of sh*t ;)

- Photographically I need to stay focused on the perfection of my vision. Get rid of the noise.

- Take a step back & start anew

- Saying "no" to "good" things opens me up to say "YES" to "amazing" things.

- Life rewards the brave.

post script - I am fully aware this is a creepy picture of me, but it was probably one of the last photos taken of me at 26. It was at my friend Kate's birthday party this weekend.

Monday, August 29, 2011, 06:35 PM
I have a camera that fits in my purse and literally goes everywhere with me. To me, it is as important as carrying a wallet. If it's not on my person, I just feel all kinds of weird. There have been so many moments that I have been so incredibly grateful I had "my pocket camera" (as I call it) on me. And there have been moments in the past where I have panicked and realized I left it on my kitchen table at home only for a moment to fly by never to be captured. When that happens it totally bums me out. Although I typically don't share the frames I take from my pocket camera on this blog, I feel really passionately about photographers carrying a camera with them, in this post I want to speak to that. I figure what a better way than with a few frames from some of the recent rolls I just got back from the lab from the camera that goes everywhere with me.

My pocket camera is a 35mm rangefinder camera that I shoot almost exclusively in black and white film. This is just a personal preference for me since so much of my work is in color and color is my natural preference. Shooting in black and white is just one way I can differentiate my every day life photographs from my other work. It forces me to see things with different eyes. In our waking life we see things in color which is why I think black and white photos have a way of transcending us to a different time and place. Now I'm on a tangent... let me get back on track... ahem.
I believe there are a few things to look for in a good pocket camera:

1) Light and easy to pop in a small purse or murse (man purse for you men out there reading).
Well duh. you want this to be something you WANT to carry with you, not a camera you make excuses not to carry out. ie a Contax 645 would NOT be a good option here. LIGHT & EASY are key.
2) A camera that challenges you in some way.
This can mean a variety of things. Maybe you are used to shooting digital, you may want to shoot film for your pocket camera. Or like me, maybe you are typically drawn to color images.. challenge yourself to just shoot in black and white or visa versa. Or pick up a toy camera that leaks light & surprise yourself. There are a TON of ways you can challenge yourself with your pocket cam.
3) Choose a camera that is non-discript & doesn't draw attention.
This one is important because if you want to ask a stranger on the street if you can take his/her photo it is a lot easier to do with a camera that doesn't scare the hell out of them :) You would be amazed at how many people turn me down for a portrait when I'm doing street photography with my Contax 645 or Canon 5DmkII... but with my Leica I don't believe I've ever been turned down by a stranger for a portrait... most are more curious about it than anything. The key here is to chose a camera that doesn't intimidate. A couple that I have used that are pretty unassuming and good: Yashika T4, Fuji x100,
4) Use it!
It's really easy to get shy about taking photos in a public place, or shooting strangers or even friends, but remember, everything gets easier with practice. My personal photographs of my everyday life inspire me on a daily basis. I hope this little tid-bit inspires some of you to pop a small camera in your bag next time you go out with friends or go on a walk... I think you may surprise yourself.

I just visited seattle for the first time a few weeks ago (love it!!) and took my (big 5dmarkii) everywhere and snapped away. I recognize so many locations in your images because I took similar shots while in seattle! It's fun to know where you were for the shots because the sounds and smells and the feeling of the crowds come back to me when I look at your images. So fun. I think I'm going to put your shots next to my shots just to see how we look at the world similarly/differently. Anyhow, thanks for the inspiration to carry a pocket camera! I carry a small digital one that I don't enjoy taking pictures with but I think if I heeded your advice and carried one that challenged me in a good way I would use it more often! Thanks :)

Anyway, this post is so inspiring me to load a roll of b/w in my film camera (vintage Canon FT QL) to have on my person at all times. I get scared with film because it's expensive to develop, but it's worth it if you stop and capture things that really matter. Which you do!

I've been thinking a lot recently about evolution as it pertains to developing a visual signature in our work.  I believe creative evolution is essential to us growing into the creative space that we aspire to live and breathe. This evolution is the key to avoiding creative burn-out. It's the key to staying curious and keeping a healthy wanderlust which allows us to approach each project with a fresh perspective & excitement for what we do. But how do we creatively evolve as artists?

Creative evolution can come in many shapes & sizes. It can come out of taking the time to travel, to try a new food, to push ourselves to try something new for no other reason other than it sounds "interesting." The evolutionary process has a natural way of forcing us to know ourselves better... it allows us to explore those things we like & dislike & develop our creative "pallet" of sorts. In doing so, we weed out those things we don't like and move closer towards the things we do. This evolutionary process helps draw closer to knowing our unique visual signature that we strive to achieve in our work. Having a visual signature is crucial to the success and longevity of any person in a creative field. Ultimately the journey to "know thyself" is one that never ends for any artist seeking to leave a mark on the world with their work.

I believe we must always be looking for those beautiful opportunities to expand our ideas about the world. This year I am making a very intentional effort to create space in my life to welcome lots of new endeavors, to challenge myself, to try new things. All of it in an effort to draw closer to that thing that is deep within me... that thing that makes me wake up and want to create. I must know this "thing" better to continue evolving and growing. I still have a long way to go towards really truly reaching the apex of knowing the depths of what my visual signature is. But that excites me. It gives me a great hunger for continued exploration in my craft and that is something I hope to cultivate for the rest of my life.

This is an exploratory shoot I did a few weeks ago. I grew up dancing about 25 hours a week, I was trained by a prima ballerina who was incredibly strict, but instilled in me a great love for dance.. I miss it. This shoot really pushed me to look at something from a different angle, to see the beauty in the small wrinkles in an ankle and shoot something that was 100% for my evolution as an artist.
