This year I have seen the greatest sunsets and sunrises of my life peeking out my little 12 inch by 6 inch plane windows. The view doesn't get much better from up here. Up here it is still, with no distractions. I am truly to be present with my thoughts, my books, my ambitions and my fears. I'm able to think clearly with more conviction, and up there my dreams somehow always become more vast. Being in the sky and looking down always puts things into perspective which beckons a posture of openness. Up there I feel full of excitement and anticipation. I secretly love my time on a plane...

We have spent a lot of time looking out those little windows this year and I am better for it. Right now I am probably catching the sunrise of a lifetime from way up there and my heart is smiling. Today we are on our way to Greece to shoot Kayko & Doug's three day wedding experience on the island of Mykonos. We will also be staying for a little bit to experience a bit of Greece in Santorini, a few other islands, and Athens for a little R&R for ourselves while my wonderful intern and assistant hold down the fort. It will be a great way to end my year as a twenty-five year old. When I come home on September 28th it will be my birthday...of which I have many thoughts on, but I suppose I will divulge those in another post on or around my birthday. It's been a wild year deserving of some reflection.

As this pertains to our clients or anyone else who sends us nice little electronic messages or calls us :) we will be with limited access to email and with no phone service so please be patient with us, we will get back with you upon our arrival back to the office.

And as this pertains to us ;), if any of you wonderful people have been to Greece and have any recommendations for us we would love to hear them. As of right now, I plan on being perfectly content with eating my feta cheeses, olives and gyros. I'm a sucker for Greek food.

Have an amazing time, and become present with all that surrounds you. You are so incredibly blessed to be living the life you are living and to realize this is even more incredible. XO

I crave that feeling as well being up in the calmness of the sky..there is nothing like it. Sometimes I just want to get a ticket and fly somewhere to sort my thoughts, dreams and aspirations.I always feel like I learn new things about myself and figure things out when I am on a plane and when I step off in the real world that I can conquer anything. You two have the most amazing trip! I can't wait to hear about your adventures and experience when you return! I am planning a backpack trip to Greece next year so it will be nice to hear what you guys take away from it! Love you two!!

Oooooh, Santorini is the best! You should totally hire a quad bike or a scooter and cruise around the island together. You'll feel like a free spirit! Have fun!

wow, Sarah. you're 25. so much depth. so much vision. so much sweetness and ripeness from such a young fruit. may you continue to grow and develop tenfold as your years continue. watch out, world.

Sarah says: Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 08:23 AM

On Santorini, I highly recommend spending time in Oia. Fira is nice, but much busier. Oia is on the top tip of the island and is just beautiful to browse and walk around in. Speaking of sunsets- in the evening, everyone gathers at the very top point at the end of the island in Oia to see the sunset. You have to get there early to get a spot, and I would bet that might beat out any other sunset as the best you've ever seen. The ocean slowly swallows the sun. We were married in Oia and honeymooned there for two weeks. Best experience ever.

What an amazing privilege and opportunity for you to go to Greece. It's up there on my list! This is a beautiful image, and I agree, no matter how short a flight I take, if I look out the window, I always begin to think a little deeper, see a little clearer, and dream a little bigger. Hope you have an amazing time, I can't wait to see your photos from the trip. Have fun! :)

At the end of July we took a trip with our good friends Mark, Candice and the cutest baby in the world, Wyatt. Mark & Candice invited us to hang out at their family estate in Speculator New York. When Candice said it was right on a lake we were there. These two have become great friends of ours over the past couple of years. You may remember their cute little faces from when we shot them here in Seattle last year.

Mark & Candice are also photographers and the four of us (plus Wyatt :) decided to do the unthinkable and get away for a week in the middle of crazy busy wedding season. The goal of the trip was just to relax and be together with no cell reception in the middle of no-where-Speculator New York. We played games, slept in, stayed up late talking, went sailing, read, took naps, had a couple camp fires, saw the most beautiful sun-sets and laughed A LOT. These two are our perfect travel-couple. Around them, things are easy and effortless and I am reminded of how sweet sharing life can be. A true friend is one that can pick you up during times of struggle, but also celebrate you in your successes. That is Mark & Candice. They are absolutley beautiful people that we feel so grateful to call friends.

To be honest, we didn't get our cameras out much this trip because we just wanted to soak it all up, but I just thought I would share a few random captures of our sweet time on the lake with one of our favorite little families, The Brookes :)

We're off to Maui today... anyone have any suggestions of things to do? We're shooting Saturday but are staying a couple extra days to explore :) Any suggestions welcomed.

Thank you so much everyone for all of the wonderful Maui recommendations! We had a blast. Road to Hana was the best/worst drive of my life lol :) Thanks again everyone who had suggestions. Those we didn't get to we will be hitting up when we are back in November.

Hey. Maui is the best island ever! if you like wine, you should drive up to the wine country, walk around, and go to Tedeschi Vineyards at Maui's Winery at Ulupalakau Ranch (http://www.mauiwine.com/directions.html). Lahaina is such a cute and beautiful town with amazing shops, restaurants, and views. For the more adventurous, you need to, absolutely must, take the curvy drive to Hana. It is one of the best drives I have ever been on and you arrive in a beautiful, non-touristy town that is so tropical. Enjoy your trip. You are going to one of my favorite places on God's beautiful earth.

Kanapaalli Beach Hotel if you're in the area--the bar is small and towny--but great! Locals play music and dance. Hopefully Dale is working.

Rent bikes and ride down Mt Haleakola. Don't do it with the tour. Pay a local dude to drive you up and drop you off so you can ride all the way down from top, and away from tour group. Dress warm.

Explore Lahaina by foot.

Napili Bay.

Sara,
Maui is beautiful. We drove across the island to Paia, a beautiful, cute town with fun energy and little places to tuck in and eat.
One thing you truly have to experience is the sunrise at Haleakala. We rose at 2:15am and drove up to the top to watch the sunrise -it explained all of the beauty in the world. I was left with a humble spirit after knowing God created such a beautiful renewal each and every day.
Enjoy your trip!

Olivine Pools!! Just before the 16 mile marker on Hwy 30. Looks like a steep hike off the road, but is really easy (lava created natural steps). AMAZING swimming and views! (Btw, turn around and go back towards Lahaina after this unless you're really brave b/c the road becomes one lane on a cliff. I did the drive in grade school and was too scared to repeat it :|) Also, if you're going snorkling, Makena Beach just south of Wailea has TONS of turtles - some people said they saw more there than Molikini :)

I love these! I would love a break like that in the middle of wedding season. Hope you enjoyed it!

Tracy says: Thursday, September 2, 2010, 07:26 AM

Hit up the Hana Highway on the east side of the island. It is a beautiful, curvy drive along the coast through amazing, lush scenery. And if you're up for a scary one-lane road, continue south through the barren, desert landscape (instead of turning back and coming back Hana Highway). I highly recommend the book MAUI REVEALED!

Paige Butcher says: Thursday, September 2, 2010, 07:19 AM

This trip sounds like perfection -- I'm completely jealous! The photos are gorgeous, as always :) Have fun in Maui (jealous about that too)!

Hey Sarah,

First of all - I absolutely love your blog and your photos. You are amazingly talented.

Second - I haven't been to Maui, but my wife and I are going there for our honeymoon in November. I've been researching extensively, and it looks like sailtrilogy.com is the "must-do" activity on the island. Their day-trip sailings feature snorkeling, whale watching and all kinds of other fun stuff. I'd encourage you to check 'em out. Please, please, please blog about your trip! I'd really appreciate some Maui advice when you get back!

Regards,
John

Looks pretty much perfect, if you ask me.

Monday, August 30, 2010, 12:09 PM
The other day I came across my very first photography blog....I hadn't looked at it in years. My initial instinct was to close the window IMMEDIATELY! Run, duck for cover! It was like looking at a photo of what you wore back in the 80's. Something like, "What was I thinking wearing a side ponytail with a hot pink scrunchy and that hideous puffy sleeved sweater?! How did anyone let me leave the house like that?"

I created this blog in the days when I was still Sarah Kenslow, a naive and wide-eyed dreamer who, when asked what I wanted to do with my life, always answered with, "A great many things." Those were the days I was still shooting with my first film camera (a canon rebel) that was bought for me when I was fourteen.  I was totally clueless, but completely infatuated with this little black box that allowed me to the power to peel back parts of my own heart while peeking into the hearts others.

However, I was by no means a brilliant photographer, quite the antithesis actually. And as I looked through this desperate and shabby little blog that I created when I was a resolutely fearless nineteen-year-old I wanted to close the window and run for cover, but instead, I sat with it. I let it all sink in. And eventually the corners of my mouth began to form into the shape of a smile. I have come a long way in my creative (and personal) evolution. And I am grateful. It is always important to remember where we come from. It keeps us humble, gracious and thankful. It also makes me so excited for my continued evolution as an artist. I've evolved so much even in the last six months. I've developed a more expansive palate of likes and dislikes, my tastes and vision are more focused and more "me". It is like finding that perfect pair of jeans, you have to try on quite a few pairs before you find that one perfect pair that makes you feel beautiful and YOU.

If we are not evolving we are standing still. Creative evolution is so incredibly important. As artists, we have NEVER arrived. We are always striving, growing, developing and evolving. There are times when looking back helps us move forward, seeing my first blog the other day helped me look my evolution dead in the face. It reminds me that I am still that wide eyed girl full of intrepidation, passion and courage. It reminds me to keep on keepin' on....to trust my gut instincts, to keep creating, pursuing growth and continue seeking to know thyself.

Do we get to see your old blog?

rich says: Sunday, September 5, 2010, 05:14 PM

I hear that - I know my main goal is to constantly compare myself to the best photographers I can find. It can be depressing, but it's also kindof exciting to see how much there is still to discover and learn. Like, I come here and I'm like ,"fuck - this is so damned good" and then I think "It'll be a lot of fun trying to get somewhere that feels like 'there' to me."

Moab, Utah is rocking my world.

I'm here with some of my girlfriends who also all happen to be photographers from all over. We pick a random city every year to go to and just spend time together, close up our shops for a week, bond and just take photos for ourselves.

oh. and we ride in hummers on big rocks.... more of that to come but you can check out the trip blog where some of us have been keeping up with our trip.... despite horrible wifi and cell service (which I think is a weird blessing in disguise).

We're staying in a giant cabin in the middle of nowhere that sleeps 20. It has taxidermy everywhere... it creeps me out a little bit but other than that the place is pretty sweet.

i. love. this. place.

i. love. my beautiful friends.

here is just a few....
