I'm writing this post today in my blue fuzzy robe with kleenex sticking out of my nose... sounds hot huh? ;) I've been under the weather this week and it reached a whole new level of sickness about two days ago which of course was when we had an all day shoot in the snowy mountains scheduled. It was one of those days when I really just had to psyche myself up and push through to get what I needed to get.

I've been thinking a lot about this idea of pushing through recently. I've been watching the Winter Olympics and I am fascinated by the absolute perseverance of the contenders. Pushing through takes on a whole new meaning when you are an Olympic Athlete. These people train day in and day out, pushing through injury, discomfort, pain, sleeplessness and the list goes on. The sacrifice they undergo is intense. But what all of these contenders have in common is passion. There is something in them that drives them to a slight sense of insanity. And I DO think you have to be slightly "insane" to achieve a certain level of greatness :) These people have designed their life around their passion which is why they make "pushing through" and persevering look easy. It's never easy but they recognize the absolute necessity in it.

I learned that one of my old dance friends who I did ballet with for years and years is in the Olympics this year as one of the top male figure skaters, Evan Lysacek. It's so amazing to think of how far he has come. Evan trained with me at one of the best ballet studios in Chicago, not because he wanted to be a ballet dancer, but because he wanted to be the best figure skater possible. He is someone that has pushed through the pain and sacrificed a great deal to get to where he is. But when you are pursuing your passion, sacrifice feels like gain and perseverance is like having your morning coffee. It just comes with the territory.

Here is a frame from the winter shoot we had on Tuesday. Lots more coming...

This post resonated with me for several reasons. firstly because I was battling my own cold and I'm the biggest baby ever when I'm sick. Your words were the "get your #$% up and do something" I needed. Also, I am in love with the olympics. I was actually lucky enough to be there for the opening weekend and it was both inspiring and incredible.
Oh, and I LOVE this photo!

Patrina says: Sunday, February 21, 2010, 03:28 PM

Your words are spot on, Sarah. And the photo is, too. Pushing thru the hard times is what separates the good from the great.

Anne W says: Saturday, February 20, 2010, 01:22 PM

I was searching Evan Lysacek on twitter the other day and I stumbled upon your post about him. I'm 17 now, but I remember I used to dance at the same studio as him ... and when I saw that you used to dance there too, I clicked on your Twitter page which led me to your website.
Anyhow ... your photos are amazing! I'm not really a photographer, but I do other types of art (drawing, music, ... living, etc.). I think what I really like about your photos is that the people in it seem really genuine. Their smiles aren't posed or anything; each person is shown beautifully and genuinely. The pictures are not only vibrant in terms of their colors but also in terms of how you manage to capture the spirit of the moment and how the photos are able to speak... (if that makes any sense at all, haha) Looking at these pictures really makes me want to pick up photography.
Just wanted to let you know! You and your husband are truly talented :)

Would not have guess that in a million years!!! I can't wait to see the rest of the shoot - this is truly amazing and we were blessed to be a part of it!!! Hugs!!! Calie and Kourtney!

Had the same thoughts last night with the Olympians! The amount of passion it takes to fight through all the physical &, no doubt, personal sacrifices to get to that level... it's quite emotional to see! Oh and if you're feeling snotty, a neti-pot works wonders for me! Feel better chica! :)

Sarah says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 12:46 PM

great post! i was just thinking about the amount of dedication needed to be an olympian the other day. truly amazing. very cool that you once trained with evan lysacek. i might have a little crush on him. haha. here's hoping he does well tonight! and i can't wait to see the rest of these snow shots, looks like they'll be amazing as usual! :)

Heather says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 11:17 AM

This image is breathtaking!
I liked what you said about Olympic athletes having to have a certain level of insanity to get where they are. My husband was a swimmer in the Olympics and he had to be focused like a horse with blinders on to get there. I think the beautiful thing is that some people in other fields (other than athletes) are in hot pursuit of "being all they can be" with the same type of dedication and "insanity". I see that in your craft....it is a beautiful thing.

Suzanne and Amanda says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 10:58 AM

Even with Kleenix's you are beauitful. Love the shot- so glad you all went forward with it. My cousin helps run a program for cancer stricken kids and Kimmie Meissner had her Olympic friends skate for a fund raiser- we got to see and meet afterwards Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto; Jeffrey Buttle; yuko Sato; Johnny Weir; others but your friend, Evan. They were all wonderful! But then so are you and Chris!!!

Talk to you later!!

kylie says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 10:54 AM

This image is amazing and I cannot wait to see all that goes with it. As you know from my incessant commenting, I have been following you for a while now and I can see the growth you are making with every shoot. You are an amazing artist Sarah and you really are doing what God created you to do. " )
On a side note, was this shoot for any specific purpose or just for fun and to experiment? I ask because if you were selling something with this image, I would buy it!

Paige Butcher says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 10:18 AM

LOVE this shot! And what you have to say about pushing through is so incredibly true. This time of year with all the snow and grey skies on the East Coast, it's easy to give up and succumb to the temptation to coast until Spring. I'm trying to push through and finish strong :)

Candice says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 10:17 AM

Suki says: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 10:12 AM

I love this post very much. I think you got it and it describes me in my passion very well. Everyone has to be some sort of insane to achieve greatness :)
Thank you for that reminder.

Michelangelo is often quoted as having said that inside every block of stone or marble dwells a beautiful statue; one need only remove the excess material to reveal the work of art within.

When I read this the other day it caused a complete mind-shift for me. You see, I'm a firm believer in the hustle, the drive and working hard for the things we want.  I have always thought of creative growth as an additive experience. In other words, the more things we do, the more hours we log behind the camera, the more experience we attain, the more knowledge we acquire.... the better artist and better photographer I will be.

What Michelangelo suggests is that the talent and the power already resides within us. It is simply a matter of chipping away at the "excess material" in order to tap into those beautiful parts of who we are.

Just sit and think about that for a second... What if it was never about the addition, but rather, it is about peeling back and chipping away at the excess material of our fears & insecurities in order to get to that place of complete potential that resides within us. Rather than placing so much importance on making additions in our life, it seems equally important that we go about subtracting the excess that weighs us down. The excess that stands in our way.

It really made me think, What is standing in my way? What excess material or thoughts do I need to chip away at to reveal the beauty that I know resides within me?

Just a thought to ponder... It really got me thinking over the past week about my own fears and how letting go of those reveals a more beautiful part of me that needs to show it's face.

Maybe it gets one of you thinking too.

The cutie in this picture is my sweet friend Tiffany's daughter, Addey :) The closest thing to purity, innocence and complete beauty... no chipping away needed. Addey is a beautiful work of art.

I feel like I have my feet in different pastures on this. I really like the interpretation of removing unwanted elements in order to become a better artist, or more generally person. But I still think Michelangelo could also be talking about vision. To be able to look at a block and see a beautiful statue. I think it works on both levels at the same time. One needs to remove the unnecessary in the quest for purity, but we also need to know what is necessary for purity before we can do that. The more experience and understanding we have the better we are at cleaning ourselves up.

Thanks for the thought-provoking post!

Carolyn says: Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 03:54 PM

Love this post, Sarah. Very insightful! It's crazy to think it (our truth) is all within us. I think a lot of it just depends on how we choose to believe in ourselves. ;D Keep up the amazing work! You are an inspiration.

carl zoch says: Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 03:22 PM

Have you read The War of Art? Very similar in thought to what Michelangelo is talking about here but uses language of resistance. It's another one of those must reads for artists.

Awesome post! Thanks for sharing.

What a great message. I come to this blog to see the beautiful person and the fun relationships (between you, Chris, and your clients) just as often as I come for inspirational images. Your ability to write, in such a vulnerable and passionnate way, is one of the raw materials you possess that I admire.

If Rose and Matt were a pie they would be blueberry. Sweet, delicious, not too over the top, lovable and absolutely beautiful.

Some of my most cherished childhood memories are graced with the sweetness of blueberry pie. I have vivid memories of staying up late with my dad while everyone else was asleep. The two of us would sneak in the refrigerator for some of my mom's amazing blueberry pie, we'd warm it up in the micro for a bit and then plop a delicious scoop of Breyer's Vanilla Bean ice cream on the top and watch it melt over the sides of the delicious purple pie.  Dad and I could devour a whole pie together in one setting. It was my dad's favorite. Dad always said it just wasn't the same without that scoop of Breyers. My dad was right about a lot of things.... but one thing my dad definitely knew was good pie and good ice cream. I now thank my dad for my horrific sweet tooth :)

Needless to say, I love blueberry pie. And I love my sweet little blueberry-pie-in-the-sky couple Rose and Matt. They are like that warm piece of blueberry pie with vanilla bean ice cream on top.  What's not to love? Matt is a super talented and popular drummer who's played with several bands that you have probably listened to. Rose is his partner in crime and is also a very talented musician and artist. I think it's so amazing that these two have had the opportunity to be on the road together on tour... what an amazing part of their story. Chris met Matt a couple of years ago while filling in for a bassist and their bass and drum groove was unparalleled :).  We met these two at church and fell in love with them and we're so excited to have them model for our mentor session with Chatti and Matt.

Chris brought out the old large format again for this shoot. I love the double exposure shot. it is lovely and so are Rose and Matt. And a HUGE shout out to the fabulous Tiffany Lowry for doing Rose's make up for this shoot. She is the bomb dot com.

p.s. And now I'm hungry for some blueberry pie. Anyone know of a good pie joint in Seattle I can get my fix?

p.p.s. For my fellow Lost Addicts out there... today is the day!!

@Patrina does she still have the blueberry fields? Next time you come to Seattle we should go blueberry picking :)

Vizcara says: Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 10:43 PM

To expand on my tweet.. I really loved the story of the blueberry pie and your dad.. What a great story about a bond between family members.. I myself found it heart warming and interesting as I am preparing for my favorite uncle's 80th birthday "he doesnt look a day over 65".... The subtle lessons learned in the moments of sharing a bit of blueberry sweetness can last a lifetime... Mine growing up was the same but it was my aunts cheesecake that she made from scratch and the brutally honest conversations she shared with me.... I miss her firary redheaded spirit...

The way you describe this couple was perfect and the story a nice feel good. I really think you should do a blog on blueberry pie. Perhaps how to make it or were to find some or the best places to find it. I know this may be a bit off topic of you usual blog post or photos but I feel it will be a well accepted and equally enjoyable blog post for all....

I think all of us have a similar story that we can relate to when we grew up.. So I think this will touch many individuals on many levels. As usual the images are great... Makes me wish I still had my Sinar P 4x5 as well as not getting ride of my first camera a RB67 Pro S last month.. Keep up the great stories I think everyone loves them as much as the photos..

Jeff Holt is a dear friend to Chris and me. He is also an excellent photographer out of North Carolina. Jeff was coming through Seattle on his speaking tour with the fabulous miss Lara Casey for the Making Things Happen Intensive Tour. Our great friend Shannon Sewell also drove up from Portland for the weekend, which equates to an awesome sleepover party at the Rhoads and an epic weekend. These two are some of our very closest friends in the industry and we love them dearly. They consistently challenge us in ways that others don't and push us to be better. Having them over for the weekend was just what the doctor ordered.

Jeff is one of those people that you can let your guard down with. One of my very favorite things about him is his unwavering passion to serve and inspire others. Jeff can find the beauty in ANYONE. He is a natural born encourager and it is absolutely infectious. He encourages the heck out of us on a regular basis. Jeff is a "Big Picture" guy with a vision and personal mission to change the world guns blazzin.' No doubt, Jeff is doing exactly that!

For Jeff, this is a year of overcoming fears. One of Jeff's personal fears is being on the other side of the lens. So as you can imagine Chris and I begged to take his photo. Facing your fears is all about walking right into them. I think Jeff was surprised at how much fun he could have being on the other side of things and it is our hope that we brought him one step closer to overcoming some of his fear of being on the other side of the glass :) *You can check out Jeff's thoughts of the shoot here*

*And for those techies that are wondering, the large format shots were all shot by Chris and yes, it is natural tilt-blur from the tilting of the front standard and bellows of the camera, not added in PS afterwards. Pretty wicked stuff.

Enjoy the fabulous Mr. Jeff Holt!

Love it! Love the one where he is laughing. Now I'm inspired to have MY portraits taken. It's hard for a photographer to be on the other side of the lens. Way to be brave, Jeff!

I ADORE the paper-rock-scissors photograph early in the post. And I only just met Jeff at the MTH 2010 in LA, but your description could not be more dead-on. Jeff, if you're reading these comments, you look amazing. Sarah, I love your work so much. There is so much heart in each photo. Fantastic job.
