Many of you have come to know my beautiful friend Tiffany Lowry from the many photo shoots we have collaborated on together. Tiffany is my go-to gal for make-up, hair, styling and overall fabulousness. Tiffany has the amazing ability to transform anyone and anything into beautiful. We have become great friends over the past year and I cannot wait for the future projects we have planned together. Tiffany's talent, ambition and absolute passion transcends into everything she touches. I love that I have a fellow sister in crime that will indulges me in my wild ideas and pushes me to think bigger, broader and more unconventionally.

Tiffany's family is full of personality (much like her). It's like her Sean and Addey all have enough personality to set a room on fire. This is a family who knows who they are and they live and breathe in their creative sandboxes. Addey is bound to be a brilliant artist just like Tiff and Sean. I think most of this shoot I saw the back of Addey's head because Addey is a strong willed girl and she does what she wants...Which for me meant "no photos." :) It was incredibly cute and endearing.

There is nothing I love more than capturing the honesty, freedom and imagination in life. Shoots like this allow Chris and I to play in OUR creative sandbox. We love The Lowry's and I'm sure you will fall in love with them too...

Yes, you made me fall in love with them. :)
Magical.
Love the ones shot through the window - especially Addey's nose pressed against it, and the one of them standing with the ocean horizon in the background.

In the Afrikaans language we have this way to describe something beautiful: 'oneindig mooi' it means the beauty never stops. This series makes me think of that beauty. I love how you captured them in front of their house, in their car and neighborhood. These images will forever be their story of where they are at this exact moment and will be appreciated when they are older and have moved to a different stage in their life.

The other day I came across my very first photography blog....I hadn't looked at it in years. My initial instinct was to close the window IMMEDIATELY! Run, duck for cover! It was like looking at a photo of what you wore back in the 80's. Something like, "What was I thinking wearing a side ponytail with a hot pink scrunchy and that hideous puffy sleeved sweater?! How did anyone let me leave the house like that?"

I created this blog in the days when I was still Sarah Kenslow, a naive and wide-eyed dreamer who, when asked what I wanted to do with my life, always answered with, "A great many things." Those were the days I was still shooting with my first film camera (a canon rebel) that was bought for me when I was fourteen.  I was totally clueless, but completely infatuated with this little black box that allowed me to the power to peel back parts of my own heart while peeking into the hearts others.

However, I was by no means a brilliant photographer, quite the antithesis actually. And as I looked through this desperate and shabby little blog that I created when I was a resolutely fearless nineteen-year-old I wanted to close the window and run for cover, but instead, I sat with it. I let it all sink in. And eventually the corners of my mouth began to form into the shape of a smile. I have come a long way in my creative (and personal) evolution. And I am grateful. It is always important to remember where we come from. It keeps us humble, gracious and thankful. It also makes me so excited for my continued evolution as an artist. I've evolved so much even in the last six months. I've developed a more expansive palate of likes and dislikes, my tastes and vision are more focused and more "me". It is like finding that perfect pair of jeans, you have to try on quite a few pairs before you find that one perfect pair that makes you feel beautiful and YOU.

If we are not evolving we are standing still. Creative evolution is so incredibly important. As artists, we have NEVER arrived. We are always striving, growing, developing and evolving. There are times when looking back helps us move forward, seeing my first blog the other day helped me look my evolution dead in the face. It reminds me that I am still that wide eyed girl full of intrepidation, passion and courage. It reminds me to keep on keepin' on....to trust my gut instincts, to keep creating, pursuing growth and continue seeking to know thyself.

rich says: Sunday, September 5, 2010, 05:14 PM

I hear that - I know my main goal is to constantly compare myself to the best photographers I can find. It can be depressing, but it's also kindof exciting to see how much there is still to discover and learn. Like, I come here and I'm like ,"fuck - this is so damned good" and then I think "It'll be a lot of fun trying to get somewhere that feels like 'there' to me."

The Deasy family holds a very special place in my heart.

When Jill got in touch with me a few months back telling me their story, I immediately felt drawn to them. The Deasy's experienced a great tragedy in their lives on February 17th 2007 when they lost their seven year old son, Luke, to a strep infection. It was sudden and unexpected and turned their world on its side. In the words of Jill, "Everything since then is directly influenced by his death, including this photo shoot.  I feel that we are living a life that is dangerous, unpredictable, ephemeral, gritty and beautiful. I feel that after three years, our family is on the verge of something powerful. I have learned that we are strong, courageous, incredibly loving, and willing to grow despite the great pain that comes from that growth. I hope this photo session with you will capture both the togetherness and separateness. I hope it captures the physical dynamics of the four of us as well as the spiritual dynamics of the five of us.  We are simultaneously broken and yet we are whole. In short, we are a family of glaring contradictions."

When I think about this beautiful family my heart feels overtaken on so many levels. I feel connected & drawn to them because I too, know what it is to have a family member taken too soon. I feel joy because these are the overcom'ers of the world. These are the rare gems of the world that pereservere and somehow turn tragedy into something beautiful. The Deasy's  are a family full of hope. They are people who love until it hurts because they know there is no other way to live.

Luke is a very real part of the Deasy family and since I never had the honor of meeting him, I pulled Daddy Matt, Momma Jill, Tommy and Ray away individually and asked them to all write in chalk one word that described their son & their brother. It was an extremely moving experience for me and the family. As the tears rolled down my cheeks, I was so happy my camera was there to guard my face. It was almost as if Luke was right there with all of us throughout the entirety of this shoot. Tommy's word to describe his brother was "Baseball" because Luke was "really good at baseball and taught him how to play" (in the words of Tommy). Ray's word was "snakes" because his brother Luke, really liked snakes and was never scared of them. Jill's words for her son were "untamed" and "inspiration." Daddy Matt's word was "old soul."

Jill and Matt just wanted honest photos of their family, nothing posed, nothing fake. What an honor it is to capture this family for all of the beautiful brokeness and beautiful hopefulness that they posses. They are a true inspiration to me and so many others. Thank you Deasy family for blessing me with this opportunity to capture your family exactly as it is.

*If you want to see a few more from my time with this lovely family you can check out their slideshow here: Deasy Family Slideshow
*The styling/hair and make up were all orchestrated by my wonderful friend Tiffany Lowry
*The music on the slideshow is by my beautiful & dear friend, Miss Amy Seeley

This is such a beautiful and I joyfully (and sorrowfully) shed tears this morning as I connected with the family. Everytime a hugging picture would come on in the slideshow, I got goosebumps. They seem to hold on just a little bit tighter in their loving embraces. What a powerful perspective I will carry with me today. Thank you for this. Kathy

Julie & Andy are like our weird couple-twins. On so many levels we just "get" each other. There is nothing greater in the world than feeling truly understood by someone. It is my belief that when you find those people that can meet you eye to eye on a deeper-than-surface level you know you have found a friend to hold on to.

Julie & Andy are the type of people that seek to feed their souls. They dream big, follow their passions and never stop learning. They are what I like to call, three-dimentional, ie. inspiring, interesting and dynamic. We decided to take an adventure with these two for their engagement session and headed up to the mountains. We spent the day together laughing, being goofballs, getting in trouble with the rangers and swatting off the most insane amount of mosquitoes that you could imagine. I think all of us were covered in bites by the end of the day despite our deepest efforts to bathe ourselves in mosquito repellant. It was the type of shoot I live for, minus the mosquitoes :). I could hardly narrow this post down because there was just so many images that took my heart. I wanted to post them all. Julie & Andy have found that other amazing soul out of so many billions that was created exactly for them and that makes me beam with excitement for them. We are so stoked for their wedding on the Big Island of Hawaii in March. Enjoy & Happy Wednesday!

Julie's Hair and Makeup was done by the fab Mrs. Tiffany Lowry *aren't those red lips Julie is sporting just yummmm!? :)
