I was so excited to wake up and find out two of our recent sessions are featured in some really fun places today :). Kaylee and Johnny's raod trip inspired lifestyle session was featured on the fabulous inspiration blog- Snippit & Ink! And Zac and Karen's vintage books/plaid shirts-and-the-great-outdoors session was featured on Forget me Knot's Inspiration Blog! 

AND to top it off the sun finally came out to play this morning which just puts me in the happiest of spirits! This week has not been the grandest for weather in Seattle- I had a very rainy shoot on Monday which I'll post soon :) and had to re-schedule a couple of other shoots :( I hate that! It's like Seattle got confused and decided that it was spring in February and winter in April??? Not fun, but we just have to roll with the punches right?! Yesterday we shot in studio for a little upcoming surprise I have planned. You'll see the outcome of that soon :) For any brides who are looking for great sources of inspiration for planning your wedding check out both of these blogs- they are packed with goodness sure to get the idea's rolling!

It's always fun to be a part of something that gets placed in a magazine. To see something that you shot in print...it feels good to hold in your hands and dog ear the corners. We shoot editorial commercial work frequently for Seattle Pacific University and really love having them as a client. The frames associated with this post are from the most recent ETC magazine that we had some shoots featured in. It was fun to see our shoot with Barcelona on a full page spread along with another shoot we did of an SPU student who is now in dental school. These type of projects and jobs mix up our shooting life and keep things interesting. 
The other pull is from a magazine called B Wedding Magazine and we had one of our brides bouquets featured in the mag :). 

So in here lies the question that a lot of people ask and want to know... "how do you get published?" We received a handful of e mails about this subject this week. The truth is we are no experts on the matter, but if there is one thing I can say it's to put your best work possible out into the world and good things come back to you from it. It may sound obvious, but it's true. Most times we haven't sought out to be published, we have simply sought after doing the best work we were capable of doing.... if you continue to do excellent work people will seek you out for it. For instance in these two examples B Wedding Magazine contacted us, SPU contacted us; When we were published in Professional Photographer Magazine and Design Aglow, both magazines contacted us. This isn't always the case and there are of course circumstances when we do submissions. An example of this would be when we have been published in Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom. That is a bi-yearly submission based process and the editors select from there. But at the end of the day it comes down to the work. Are you creating work that is unique/interesting and different from those around you? Are you standing out in your market? Have you differentiated yourself? Are you truly putting your best foot forward? Is your goal to get published or is your goal to create work that is your very best that you are proud of?

just got my first cards from the printer, will spend tomorrow handing them out all over town - VERY uncomfortable for me!!! But my vision is to take as many meaningful photos as possible and do everything with love. Sarah you have been elemental in getting things started for me, more than you know.

Interviewed!

This one is a shout out to all of our Oklahoma peeps! For those of you that don't know this, Chris was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. He's a "good ole' oklahoma boy" as they say ;). I grew up in Chicago, but moved to Oklahoma for college which is where I met Chris. We were recently interviewed by Okie Creative, which is a really neat site dedicated to bringing creative minds across Oklahoma together to share resources and gain inspiration. I loved the mission behind what Jeremy Charles is trying to do there. Really exciting stuff. 

We all are a product of our journey and Oklahoma is part of ours. Some amazing musicians and artists have come out of Oklahoma, ie. Flaming Lips, Other Lives and others. We are huge fans of the creative community there; rather, we're huge fans of building a community wherever you are! People are what make the world go round. Wherever we are, we should become part of a creative community. And if you think one doesn't exist in your area... Start it! No great movement has ever happened without someone stepping out, seeing a need and taking a risk. I just got an e mail from a blog reader of ours, Becka Knight, who is doing exactly this with a new project she has in the works... high fives to you Becka! I don't know where we would be without our creative community... the people who push us to be better (each of you who reads our blog included in that statement).

We are so excited to have Cristin & Harpur's beautiful estate wedding featured in the latest issue of Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom Magazine. Cristin & Harpur's wedding was so much fun to be a part of. They truly incorporated their personal style into every part of the weekend. In the magazine article, I loved Cristin & Harpur's advice to get people out of their comfort zones and do some kind of destination or getaway wedding. Weddings like that are always an "experience" rather than an "event." Cristin & Harpur's wedding was so special because they really took the time to make it an incredible experience for each person in attendance. 

My favorite thing that Cristin said to other brides in the article is "Don't worry about getting your dress dirty." And this is why Cristin is my kind of gal. :) That is the best advice anyone can give you brides! Let go of the dress and live in it on your wedding day! Your dress is not supposed to be something that stresses you out it is supposed to be something that makes you feel beautiful. The brides that embrace this sentiment always get the best photos. They are less concerned with worrying about their dress touching the ground and more concerned with getting amazing images that they will have forever. You wont remember the little stain on the bottom of your dress, you WILL remember how you looked in your photos. So on your wedding day, Let go of the dress and the stress and LIVE in it on your big day! Not only will it make your photographer happy, it will also make all of your bridesmaids happy too. When the bride is stressed, everyone is stressed... so take one more thing off your list of things to worry about on your wedding day and let go of the dress :)
