Meet Marissa, she is our fabulous intern-extraordinaire! We took her on back in late August/early September when we were in peak season and were needing some help. We had heard from a lot of our industry friends that an intern had been a real asset to their team and workflow, but we really had no idea just how amazing Marissa would be! She is truly a HUGE blessing.

Our intern commitment is 10 hours per week for a year. Marissa is currently a student at Seattle Pacific University and has a passion for photography.  During the course of her time with us she gets to learn the in's and out's of how we run our business/process images/work with clients/manage our books etc. and she is at liberty to ask us any and all questions whenever she wants in exchange for helping us run our studio better.  Having her on board has made us more efficient and helps our clients have the best experience possible. It is like a year long mentorship for her, and we have the honor of benefiting from Marissa's amazing talents and skills over the next year. We are already dependent on this girl! I am dreading the day we have to replace her next fall!

Marissa is an extremely gifted, talented and funny woman. She constantly makes Chris and I laugh. She is one of the funniest girls I know. I love that about her. She is a very hard worker, asks good questions, and is a lover of life. She is also an ESFJ, according to my favorite temperament test, Myers Briggs. Apparently I like ESFJ's because I just adore Marissa. She is a PERFECT fit for the Sarah Rhoads Family and we feel so thankful to have her on board with us!

These first two frames are Polaroids and the coloring in the first frame just makes me melt... lurve it. Oh, and isn't Marissa just drop dead gorgeous?

Hey Sarah -
these are really great. I have been looking at your Polaroid work, and coincidentally just got a 600se. Which film is the first shot?

Thanks a ton, and thank you for being a constant inspiration!
Cheers

Well first, Marissa is drop dead gorgeous. Wow. What an incredible smile and laugh, and those eyes. Wow.

Sarah, how stoked are you to have a great intern, and an ESFJ at that!! I've been a lover of Myers Briggs since my dad first turned me on to it in 7th grade, and ESFJ is one of my favorite types!!

As I was perusing the isles of Target the other day, I noticed that there was red and green all around me, stalkings, elves, Santa's, holiday "scents," ivy, and the whole nine. I love the holiday's and it dawned on me that they are just around the corner! It's pretty hard to believe that soon it will be getting dark at 4pm in Seattle, our old house will be getting so cold we can hardly stand it and we'll be making holiday cookies before you know it. That being said, this is just a friendly reminder to each of our clients that if you would like to purchase any prints, canvas's, high res images on disc, etc.. You will want to have those orders placed with us no later than NOVEMBER 15th at midnight. All orders placed after that date cannot be guaranteed to arrive in time for the Christmas holiday. Thanks you so much for your attention to this matter and if you have any questions, as always, please feel free to e mail us!

Almost two years ago my world was rocked. I attended Life {as an artform} in Vancouver, B.C. with Jesh de Rox and I truly came back from the workshop with a new set of eyes and a new heart for the way I see my work and the world around me. It is a workshop that is less about "aperture and shutter speed" and more about "finding what it is you want to say to the world", "connection," "planting the seed." I found it incredibly re-freshing and exactly what I needed.  It is unlike any other workshop out there right now. Jesh truly has something unique to share with the world. From my time in Vancouver two years ago, I walked away with 11 new totally amazing photographer friends that I still keep in close contact with :) And I am sooo excited to attend all over again in Seattle this April!!

I am writing all this today because Jesh is bringing Life as an Artform to SEATTLE in April 13-15th and I couldn't be more stoked to share this experience with you. My good friend, Jesse, from Our Labor of Love and I will be helping host the experience here in Seattle. Registration opened this morning at 8AM. Spots are limited in order to keep the experience intimate so run on over and sign up here: http://enlighten.jeshderox.com/#workshops Excited to see you there!

Chris and I feel so honored and stoked to be nominated for Blu Domain's Photographer of the Year for 2009-2010! Especially to stand up there with a handful of other very talented friends and colleagues that I respect so much.

We were interviewed yesterday for the nomination; and for those who care to read a little more about the things we  splurge on, what Chris is addicted to and what makes us tick you can check out the interview here: http://bludomain.com/blog.cfm. Voting opens today at some point (I'm sure they will post it on their blog) and we would love your support.

The Rhoads have come a long way but we still have a very long way to go. We were having dinner the other night with our friends Brian Wurzell and Promise Tangeman Wurzell. We got into a discussion about common traits among very successful people in their respective fields. People who have achieved great success over long or short periods of time. Brian pointed out that the one thing he noticed about all of the people who have achieved great success over long or short periods of time went through a "season" of life where they were totally focused on what was in front of them. An interesting and insightful thought that I think has a lot of truth to it. I recently read Outliers by Malcom Gladwell. In his book Gladwell stresses three main points; hard work is critical to success, BUT successful people were often in the right place at the right time AND (and most importantly IMO) 10,0000 hours of working on skill is the magic number. The first people to get there have a distinct advantage.
I feel like I have spent A LOT of time behind the camera recently. My life right now consists of shoot/edit/shoot/edit repeat process. However, I still have a lot of hours to put under my belt before I get to 10K hours behind the camera. Every time I shoot I get pumped! I learn something new. I get more confident behind the camera with every click of the shutter. We get quite a few e mails asking about how to become a better photographer, how to achieve success in this industry.... The truth is, I'm not really sure... but a few things I do know; We try to do everything we do with Excellence, work hard and log TONS of hours behind the camera, making 10,000 hours our goal. I'm working on those things everyday.
What do you think the keys to success or achievement are?
Anyway... just some thoughts I have been pondering lately. Happy Hump Day!
