A few weeks ago I flew down to the great state of Michigan to speak to a great group of female photographers at the HER photography conference. I'll be honest, speaking on a large scale as a keynote speaker isn't something I would put at the top of my resume. So needless to say, I was pretty scared out of my mind to talk to over 200 photographers on a platform for 90 minutes. Everything in me wanted to run, flee, say that I was busy and couldn't do it! BUT I'm so glad that I didn't. I faced a fear and I left personally changed from the experience.

A large focus of my talk was on this idea of dreaming audaciously, staying hungry and acting courageously. This has been an ongoing theme in my journey thus far and I feel pretty passionate about each creative person putting these ideas into daily practice. My good friend, Brent Holloman, teamed with us to create some amazing 11x14 posters of a lot of these ideas & phrases that we strive to live by. If you care to check out other posters you will find them at our online store here.

There are no truer words than these, "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours." - Henry David Thoreau. I've seen this play out in my life time and time again. Dreams don't just materialize on their own. Everything must originate from somewhere... a tiny seed of a dream if fed and acted on intentionally can become so much more than you ever imagined possible. Oftentimes I think we're scared to dream audaciously. We're scared to let ourselves go there because if we dream it into existence and then don't accomplish that goal or dream we feel like failures in some way. But in order to succeed at anything, our desire for success should be greater than our fear of failure. I have to remind myself of this everyday. I have a great many things I aspire to do in this life, which means I don't have a lot of time for fear these days. Instead of allowing fear to take up that mental mind space I'd rather fill that mental real-estate with my audacious dreams and plans to turn those dreams into something real.

and a big thank you to Tangie Sheets for taking this photo of me speaking!

Sarah, is this awesome graphic your work?
If so, could you please send me a bigger version of this? I don't ask at all for high resolution, I just would like to share it with a friend cause this is exactly what I tried to tell her about the link between ambition and courage.

Be blessed by our lord in these christmas days,
Martin

What if? It's THE question that fosters ingenuity. It drives our advancements, large & small and yet it's the simplest of questions... What if?

What if, I take a leap into the unknown?
What if, we decide to do something that scares the heck out of us?

What if... is a question that is not only asked on a regular basis in Chris & I's world... it is a question that we live by. Why? because we are dreamers. But more importantly, we are do'ers. No great endeavor ever began without someone asking "what if?" and thus setting something brilliant in motion. I imagine it is a question that is on the tongue of any great innovator at any given moment.

We are so thrilled to be invited to be a speaker/innovator & collaborator at the very first "WHAT IF" conference in Cabo, Mexico this coming January. We believe in what this conference is all about. This is a conference for Creatives, by Creatives. It's for people that want to put something great into motion. Each of the innovators involved in this project have very unique respective journeys & perspectives that have required taking leaps of faith to get to where we all are. We are excited to learn from everyone at the conference. The innovators on board for this so far are us, Jesse & Whitney of Our Labor of Love, our Aussie buddy Dan O'Day, Steve & Jenn Bebb, Justin Lyon , Jesh de Rox & Jamie Ibarra. Such an incredible crew of people that we feel fortunate to link arms with.

I am personally totally stoked to hang out at a resort in Mexico with a bunch of totally talented photographers and gain new insights, perspectives & get back to the heart and soul behind why I am a photographer. If you are a big dreamer, an innovator & someone who has questions about "what next?" this is a conference for you. For those of you want to learn more please head on over to the website to hear more. And you can get signed up here.

I have a camera that fits in my purse and literally goes everywhere with me. To me, it is as important as carrying a wallet. If it's not on my person, I just feel all kinds of weird. There have been so many moments that I have been so incredibly grateful I had "my pocket camera" (as I call it) on me. And there have been moments in the past where I have panicked and realized I left it on my kitchen table at home only for a moment to fly by never to be captured. When that happens it totally bums me out. Although I typically don't share the frames I take from my pocket camera on this blog, I feel really passionately about photographers carrying a camera with them, in this post I want to speak to that. I figure what a better way than with a few frames from some of the recent rolls I just got back from the lab from the camera that goes everywhere with me.

My pocket camera is a 35mm rangefinder camera that I shoot almost exclusively in black and white film. This is just a personal preference for me since so much of my work is in color and color is my natural preference. Shooting in black and white is just one way I can differentiate my every day life photographs from my other work. It forces me to see things with different eyes. In our waking life we see things in color which is why I think black and white photos have a way of transcending us to a different time and place. Now I'm on a tangent... let me get back on track... ahem.
I believe there are a few things to look for in a good pocket camera:

1) Light and easy to pop in a small purse or murse (man purse for you men out there reading).
Well duh. you want this to be something you WANT to carry with you, not a camera you make excuses not to carry out. ie a Contax 645 would NOT be a good option here. LIGHT & EASY are key.
2) A camera that challenges you in some way.
This can mean a variety of things. Maybe you are used to shooting digital, you may want to shoot film for your pocket camera. Or like me, maybe you are typically drawn to color images.. challenge yourself to just shoot in black and white or visa versa. Or pick up a toy camera that leaks light & surprise yourself. There are a TON of ways you can challenge yourself with your pocket cam.
3) Choose a camera that is non-discript & doesn't draw attention.
This one is important because if you want to ask a stranger on the street if you can take his/her photo it is a lot easier to do with a camera that doesn't scare the hell out of them :) You would be amazed at how many people turn me down for a portrait when I'm doing street photography with my Contax 645 or Canon 5DmkII... but with my Leica I don't believe I've ever been turned down by a stranger for a portrait... most are more curious about it than anything. The key here is to chose a camera that doesn't intimidate. A couple that I have used that are pretty unassuming and good: Yashika T4, Fuji x100,
4) Use it!
It's really easy to get shy about taking photos in a public place, or shooting strangers or even friends, but remember, everything gets easier with practice. My personal photographs of my everyday life inspire me on a daily basis. I hope this little tid-bit inspires some of you to pop a small camera in your bag next time you go out with friends or go on a walk... I think you may surprise yourself.

I just visited seattle for the first time a few weeks ago (love it!!) and took my (big 5dmarkii) everywhere and snapped away. I recognize so many locations in your images because I took similar shots while in seattle! It's fun to know where you were for the shots because the sounds and smells and the feeling of the crowds come back to me when I look at your images. So fun. I think I'm going to put your shots next to my shots just to see how we look at the world similarly/differently. Anyhow, thanks for the inspiration to carry a pocket camera! I carry a small digital one that I don't enjoy taking pictures with but I think if I heeded your advice and carried one that challenged me in a good way I would use it more often! Thanks :)

Anyway, this post is so inspiring me to load a roll of b/w in my film camera (vintage Canon FT QL) to have on my person at all times. I get scared with film because it's expensive to develop, but it's worth it if you stop and capture things that really matter. Which you do!

*** This Bag has been awarded! Congrats to Steph Motz!! ***

Last week was a little bit like Christmas mostly because I got a new camera bag from Kelly Moore! It is her newest bag called the "mimi."  I took it around town all weekend for some personal shooting & to give it a test drive. It is a fantastic day-to-day camera bag that fits an ipad or journal in the back perfectly. What I love about Kelly's bags is she really thinks of everything... not just the way they function, but also, the way they look and feel. It is just the right size for day to day shooting and still totally stylish which every girl needs right?!

I'm really stoked because Kelly has been kind enough to allow us to giveaway one bag to one lucky winner! This is NOT just a giveaway for girls, guys you can participate too :) Kelly has agreed that the winner can pick ANY bag of their choice that is of the same value as the Mimi. Totally awesome right?! Here's how to play... simply twitter something about this giveaway & include @SarahRhoads & @kellymooreclark in your tweet and leave us a comment here on my blog with one thing inspires your creativity. We will be choosing a winner at random within the week. Good luck!

Since my babies have been born, the tiniest of things innspire me. From their little toes, to the wonder gleaming in their eyes, life to me is now an inspiration. They seem to see magic in everything. It causes to to take a second look at things often at a different direction. Thanks!

I am inspired by things that are often overlooked. Like rusty handrails and old, forgotten walls. I think it's important as a beginning photographer, like myself, to be aware that there are beautiful things all around me. I try to give everything it's chance to be lovely.

I'm inspired by beautiful things. Whether outside in nature, in print, or on the interwebs, beautiful things make me happy. The neatest part about coming into my own as a photographer is realizing that most beautiful things are just regular things with beautiful light. Love.

My inspiration comes from my girlfriends photography. Her ability to change my perspective through her vision truly impacts all aspects of my life.

Thanks Tonie.

Tonie Duchemin says: Friday, August 19, 2011, 03:04 PM

To me inspiration comes from hard times. I started my photography with a friend who's house burnt down and she lost her senior pictures at the time. I told her I had a nice camera and we could give her a make over and take some photos to distract her from her loss. That was over 7 years ago, and here I am inspired by how amazing other photographers are and how BADLY I want to get even better! I do photogrphy for less fortunate families and for people who may not otherwise be able to have a "professional" at their event. Its filled with passion, heart, smiles and most importantly the challenge of never being "the best" but always being inspired and not discouraged by what other photographers do! We are all in it together!

Melissa Pattee says: Friday, August 19, 2011, 02:43 PM

My inspiration can come from various things... textures, fabrics, photography, music, fashion, nature, quotes, etc. Some of my biggest inspirations are simply life's experiences. We all face different circumstances and decisions, and those moments are what direct us down our paths in life, and shape who we become. THOSE moments are my inspirations. It often seems that even the hardest, toughest, more desperate times are the ones where I learn the most from, and find hope and inspiration in.

Brittany Sweat says: Friday, August 19, 2011, 02:27 PM

Jesus inspires me. Everything about this life is created by him and it's just beautiful. Even the ugly things have a beautiful meaning, but I know that it's in His plan and he loves them anyway. He is the most creative being and i'm so glad I know Him :)

Many things inspire me but it's actually the things that I take the time to notice...the small things that matter most. Like the smell of a warm summer breeze, the sound of a crackling campfire, the laughter of the couple having coffee on a patio downtown...We should all cherish the small moments in life because in the end..those really are the things that inspire us on a day to day basis, sometimes without noticing :)

creativity is driven by mostly my emotions - whether I'm feeling adventurous, bored, forlorn, longing, happy, lonely, content, I find the fun comes in trying to express those emotions into photos. Oftentimes, it's the most unexpected/surprising (and sometimes seemingly mundane) images that are able to capture my emotions - but that's the fun of creativity, it always goes beyond what you merely expect :)

This giveaway is killing me. It's really, really killing me. My hands itch to hold it.

Anyway...on to the topic of inspiration.

I'm inspired by many things. There's so much beauty in this world. It's hard to pinpoint a single thing that makes me want to create. An emotion, a song, a beautiful and unforgettable landscape, silence.

Art inspires me. In other people's work I see possibilities, different perspectives, the opportunity to expand. It challenges me.

And also the people that I photograph inspire me. We photograph people from different backgrounds and cultures. Hearing the stories of people who have faced a life of hardship, learning from them and having the opportunity to capture dignity, strength, hope and beauty in them is always an honor and a reason to be inspired.

I mean, when someone can look at a picture and say "that is soooo ______" that makes me smile. It's the moments in life worth capturing that makes us as photographers aspire to develop and fine tune our skills.

My oldest is on the autism spectrum, and is always working on a fabulously odd project or idea. Thinking outside the box is his way of thinking. He inspires my work to be unique, to break the rules, to shoot when the light isn't great, to embrace what I see as beautiful even if no one else "gets it".

One thing that inspires me to be creative, especially within the parameters of photography, is a story. But really in every aspect of my life, the story behind something and that being made evident or expressed is what inspires my passions and desire to be creative. Within my photographs I like to paint a picture of the story of a couple or a family, to tell the story of a band playing THEIR stories for an adoring audience. My favorite books and movies are those based on characters and dialog and the expression of.... their stories. When I design or decorate a room I like to include artwork and brick-a-brake that tells the story of my life, travels, and the love my husband and I share. When I talk with friends I want to hear, THEIR STORIES! When I sob while reading the news or watching a sappy commercial it's the stories of someone's life that touches me. In everything, I am most ignited, and inspired by the telling and portraying of a story.

this might sound strange, but adversity can sometimes inspire me. when there is an overwhelming problem going on in my world, it typically causes me to stop whatever craziness was happening and take stock (i have a meltdown, of course) + then i break through barriers i hadn't known i could break through. less intensely...i adore the rain, the way it smells, the way it feels on my face, the way it makes everything look fresh + shiny....rainfall always sparks my creativity.

I'm inspired by so many things, but ultimately, my daughter is my inspiration to take photos, to create, to keep going even when life is so very hard. I find beauty and inspiration in much - from something broken and neglected to something gleaming and new, life, death, and everything in between. But above all...my wonderful daughter is everything inspired.

I really admire that both you and Kelly have created huge brands outside of the wedding industry while still remaining true to yourself, which I hope to accomplish this some day and take my business to the next level, whatever that may be. :)

Oooh I love these bags and don't yet have one! Let's see, lately I've found myself so inspired by really good cinematography. The way something is shot, the way the camera pans, the story it tells by the way it is shot that goes beyond the actual plotline of the story.... things that are shot outside of the norm and push boundaries of what we're used to seeing. That's really inspiring to me :)

I never win these things, but you've got to play to win, so. . . .

Watching children play sparks my creativity -- there's something about how they throw themselves into their own world that makes me want to do the same. Runner up to that is probably anything minimilistic. . . clutter keeps me distracted, but removing it frees my mind.

One thing that is hard during the motherhood is being alone, it's rare. When I get alone I have space to dream. To imagine. To create.

I am inspired by the look of true love in someone's eyes. I melt seeing couples, whether young puppy love, newlyweds, or grandparents with that spark in their eye. There's just something about that look that they give eachother, the secret shared between just the two of them, that no one else can fully understand the charisma between the two. I instantly want to be snapping away everytime I see it. Cheesy, I know... but I'm being honest. :)

Musicals have really been inspiring me lately! Especially Seven Brides for Seven Brothers :) The dance scenes, the songs, the costumes, everything about them has really challenged me to go for the cheesiest poses I can think of, because sometimes it's in the cheesiest moments (and the moments right after) where you get to see the lighter side of people.

I'm inspired by a few things:

....When I look up out of my sun roof in my 11 year old beetle and see something totally different each time I look (forcing me to see what's in the rectangle frame)

....Coaching high school girls volleyball. I have the brightest group of young women-just coming into their own (self, style, personality). I'm inspired to see how they are growing not only in their volleyball skills but in how they interact with each other as well as how the lessons they learn in volleyball transfer over into their school life and home life.

...I find inspiration through conversations with my dad. Each day we have a debrief- a quick call on my way to work or after practice. Or a long conversation that lasts from the drive home until I park my car in the garage, walk up to my attic bedroom and sit. Each conversation is different and he daily challenges me to 'think bigger'.

I have so much respect for people who can put words together in a beautiful and meaningful way. Lately, I've found the most inspiration in stumbling over a provoking thought; typically from a book I'm invested in. The greatest inspiration comes from the kind of thought that perfectly sums up something you've been trying to express, but just couldn't find the words.

I find my inspiration through Christ and my husband. When you think about all the beautiful things He created for us you can't help but want to grab your camera to capture them! My husband is one of those men who runs right beside me soaking in all the beauty. Each and every moment we capture is a new memory for us or someone else and that is a great feeling!

And to take it to a personal level with the Kelly Moore bag...I find inspiration in her ingenuity! I mean really, who can create a bag that can be a photographer's bag AND a diaper bags all the while looking AMAZING! My husband or I could carry this with camera gear or baby gear and no one would know. I'm inspired by her creativity in creating this product! Way to go Kelly!!!

All of those things inspire me to keep my camera around and to take as many photos, write as many poems, and sketch as many images as I can. So, travel, food, life, and friends inspire me to be creative.

Ahhh I've been wanting the mimi for so long! What keeps me inspired in my wedding photo biz is looking back at the early pioneers of photography (Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, especially as a woman) when it was at it's purest form, and seeing the proof that equipment, fancy lighting and new technology isn't what makes a photograph great- it's the eye behind it.

I work as a photo editor and as a freelance photographer by night :) so the work of photographers I work with every day inspires me SO much. their drive and dedication is endlessly motivating, sometimes I don't know how they keep on going when they face really difficult situations, but somehow they do and they continue to make beautiful images and they'll go right back in to the field a few weeks later and do it all over again. when I find my motivation waning, I think about them!

message sent out into the twitterverse!

The love that God has for me, INSPIRES me to be creative in my daily life, to love with out reservation, to give with out expecting to live a life worth living!!!

I've recently started doing weddings, and I find the most inspirational thing for my creativity is the way a bride and groom look at each other when they don't know I'm watching. Keeps me motivated and working hard to get the most unique pictures for them out of their day. :) Woo hoo for Kelly Moore bags, I wouldn't trust anything else for my camera!

mmmm....this giveaway is great! I would buy each Kelly Moore bag style in a different color if I could!

But something that inspires me creatively is music. I love the feeling and emotion that can be exuded though the lyrics and melodies. I try to create that same feeling and emotion in my work too!

I get inspired by how much other people love photography! When I see what people do and say about their work and others it really inspires me to get better!

It's funny because the other day, I was looking at Kelly's bag and thinking, "I need to save up and get one of these bad boys!" And now you're having this awesome giveaway. So cool!

These days, what fuels my creativity is calmness. And Pinterest! Of all things. Whenever I am feeling low on ideas or inspiration, I will go float around the site a bit and get some great ideas for things I can do. Even if I don't do anything, seeing all that creativity usually gets me in the creative spirit. :)

My creative inspiration usually comes messiness. A messy plate, a dirty piece of wood. It makes me want to shoot something on top of it.... with a camera of course. ;)

awesome give-a-way! thank you for having it.

I am inspired when I am present in the moment. If I just take the moment to breathe and take in my surroundings, the images start to form in my mind and I am hopefully lucky enough to be carrying my camera with me (hence why this bag would be great and I must look into getting one if I win or not!)

take care,

Dee-Ann

Sigh, inspiration is something that I find outside in in nature more than any place on earth. The internet is full of blog posts of amazing photographers that I hope to someday be like. But as I shoot I find my work looking more and more like everyone else's and I'm needing to find my own style. So looking to God's creation and looking at people and their lives inspire me.

Thanks for this opportunity! Hope I get picked ;-)

Hip hip hooray for giveaways! My creative inspiration often comes from moments that I'm not expecting - someone with really good personal style walking down the street, beautiful light pouring through some trees, or stumbling across an abandoned location that I've never seen before. Inspiration is all around us; we just have to keep our eyes open to it.

easy peasy - by surrounding myself with other creative, envelope-pushing forces

Thanks for posting about Kelly's bags! SO CUTE! :D

I do not have a twitter but was wondering if I could still participate? So much inspires creativity for me. That could be sitting on pinterest for hours or sitting outside. Seeing others' art makes me want to produce good art, seeing others work hard to produce thought provoking work encourages me to do the same.
