There are various elements that we interact with on a daily basis that impact that which we create. I thought it might be fun to start a little section called "Chris & Sarah's Corner" where I can ramble about the things that we're digging, the things that make us come alive, movies we liked, experiences that were fun, products that rock etc. etc. these can be photography related or not-so photography related. So here we are, at the first addition of "Chris & Sarah's Corner" ;) enjoy.

1) Seth Godin, one of our very favorite authors released his new book, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? And it goes on shelves TODAY! The Rhoads just ordered our copy. This one sounds like it will be a game changer for any creative out there. It appears it will cover the gamut of Seth's views on collaboration, endurance and what it means to be an artist. I love Seth's definition of "art" containing the following:
1. Art is made by a human being.
2. Art is creative to have an impact, to change someone else.
3. Art is a gift. You can sell the souvenir, the canvas, the recording... but the idea itself is free, and the generosity is a critical part of making art.
*Amen to that! I can't wait to get my hands on this one! You can check out a full interview with Seth, here on White out Truth.

2) So as most of you know, Apple (one of our favorite companies out there) released the new iPad yesterday. Before the announcement Steve Jobs said it would be the most important announcement of his career. Being the wife to a full fledge tech guru, I have been hearing about the iPad since the rumors began. We went to bed the night before the Keynote feeling as if it were Christmas Eve... excited to see what the innovative minds over at Apple would impress us with this time. My impression of the iPad is largely positive and Apple never ceases to amaze us with it's slick design that is completely user friendly. However, there are a couple of things I wish they included in the design
- The HUGE bezel is an eyesore.
- The lack of Adobe flash support... come on Apple, can we still not play nice with Adobe?
- It would have been nice if the iPad allowed you to multi-task. From the reviews it sounds like you aren't able to listen to your music and at the same time write and e mail?
The things I love about it:
- I absolutely dig Apple's new e-reader application to feed my addiction for reading on the road.
- It has the potential to really change the game for photographers for showing our images in client meetings and I am excited about the potential for that.
*My main thought on the iPad... it appears as if it is a glorified iPod touch with a few other added elements. I love it, however, I thought it might be slightly more revolutionary.

3) I took on a personal project this week that I poured my heart and soul into creating. It felt good. Like, really good. I designed an album of our Thailand experience.  It was like reliving the journey all over again. Something about it just made me come alive... and the best part is it's an album for US! I don't have to give it away when I'm done. If you want to view the full album design of Thailand you can see it here. It will also be at the Renaissance Booth at the WPPI trade show if you want to see it in tactile form.
So if you have some photos sitting around that you have been needing to do something with. Take a day... design a book... it will invigorate you.. I promise.

So what are your thoughts on the iPad? What things are inspiring you right now? Good movies you have seen, good books you are reading? All thoughts and comments always welcome in the comment section. Our corner is your corner :)

Thank you. This was just the right ending to a week of ups and downs thinking about business and creativity. Good to just sit back and watch your slideshow/album & reflect on what it means to make art, to share with others generously and with joy.

Hey Sarah,

Similar, I've been bothering my wife with all the iPad rumours as well. Like you I had a few dissappointments as well. In particular not able to multi-task (i.e., music in the background while I work). But oddly enough my wife now said she will buy a mac (instead of a PC) and it's going to be an iPad. And when I asked why? It's simple and looks easy to use w/o re-learning a new operating system (for the record, she uses my mac but sometimes ask how to do "x" or how do you do "y") and it's cheap. mmmhhh I guess that's been Apple's goal with this project.

By the way are you going to pick one up?!?!

Regards,
Carl from T.O.

Hi Sarah. Great blog post as usual :) I also follow you on Twitter and have noticed the odd tweet about music that you are listening to while you work. It seems that you and Chris are huge music lovers and that you draw inspiration from listening to some of your faves. I think that music has an amazing ability to spark ideas and feed the creative soul. I'd love to hear more about what music is inspiring you right now!

Sarah, I waited under this very same 7-11 when I got caught in a rain storm on my motorbike. I drove this way everyday for almost a year. Love how you've captured it.

I LOVE Chris and Sarah's Corner please keep it up. Right now the post you guys have been doing have really inspired me. I'm not much of a reader but have read some of the books you have posted and I'm hooked. I think I have found my Zag.
Your right the I Pad is a glorified I Touch but I think as a photographer its a great tool.

Great post! Excited to read Linchpin (just downloaded the audio book). iPad leaves a bit to be desired (especially the name), still a must though. The Thailand slide show is awesome, really like all the portraits.
Also if you haven't seen this, here's something to hold you over till you get Linchpin. http://mixergy.com/linchpin-lizard-seth-godin/

The album you designed is beautiful. Like, jaw dropping beautiful. I have TONS of personal pictures I've been wanting to do something like that with and I've just been pushing it to the side, so thanks for the reminder!

Tina Florance says: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 03:51 PM

The album is beautiful. I'm excited you got to design an album for your own enjoyment. Can't wait to see pictures of the physical book when you receive it. Inspirational, as always.

@marywyar We love Vision Art books as well, however, Renaissance is going to do a friggin sweet book for us with a unique cover. I'll post it when we get it or you can go see it featured at their booth in Vegas

We watched "Sketches of Frank Gehry" a few weeks ago. Being architecture guru's, you two have probably seen it already, but i was so amazed at how Gehry's is so unafraid to zag. Its inspiring to see someone just going for it, not concerned with the trends or the norm or the status quo. Sounds like the Rhoads'.
I completely agree with you about the IPad. I knew it would land between the iphone and the macbook, but i expected it to be closer to the macbook, ie. more of a computer, and less of an ipod touch.
I'm really excited about Chris & Sarah's corner!

mary says: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 02:22 PM

First of, love the Thailand album... makes me want to travel & document my travels properly instead of in a 'touristy' fashion. I am surprised to hear you're doing a Renaissance album with the design... curious to hear the options you're going to choose for binding so it doesn't feel like a 'wedding album'. I thought, while watching the slide show, I bet they're getting a Vision Art book from this...

Enjoyed every second of the Thailand album slideshow. Beautiful work, as usual. :)

Great post you guys! I think it is post like these that sets you apart from a lot of professional photographers out there - it is personal and human. I love it.

And I will agree on the iPad. I'm stoked to use it for the photog business but for some reason it seems like Apple had a slip up this time. Not usual for them.

Absolutely incredible photos from Thailand!

koes says: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 02:07 PM

will check out the book. i am feeling 'meh' about the iPad though. will be traveling to singapore and indonesia (borneo and possibly bali), can't wait to shoot and make an album like you did. thanks too for the street photography tips!!
