I couldn't wait till tomorrow to share a few frames from Emma and Bubba's shoot.
So here is a little sneak peek from their shoot at the Ace in Seattle. A big shout out to our fantastic makeup artist/hair stylist extraordinaire Tiffany Lowry for making our sweet Emma and Bubba look even more fantastic and for bringing the fun :)

We shot these when it was already dark out in a room at the Ace with no windows so we used a quick one light set up and a 60-inch umbrella. Luckily our Polaroid 600SE, otherwise known as the GOOSE, has a flash synch.. coming in very handy in these type of situations.

More images to come from this ultra fun shoot bright and early tomorrow morning...

Kara Wieler is a great photographer out of Manitoba, Canada. She came out to Seattle to work with Chris and I on an 8 hour mentor session. The three of us had a blast hanging out all day. Kara is talented, down to earth, easy going and strong willed. All great qualities to have when running your own business. I am so excited to see where she is headed!

During her time with us we did a full portfolio review, chatted about goals, technique, working with subjects, posing etc. We packed soooo much into the day and even took Kara to our favorite Thai restaurant for lunch. We ended our time together with an awesome shoot at the ACE hotel in downtown Seattle which I will be doing a full post on tomorrow. *I may even give you a sneak peek at a few Polaroid's from the shoot this afternoon :). You're going to freak out when you see how cute this little couple is that I arranged for us to shoot. But in the meantime, enjoy a little bit of the beautiful Miss Kara Rhea.

One month from today we will be in Thailand!! Chris and I are so stoked for the adventure. We have had a very busy season and we are looking forward to getting out from behind our computers and exploring a place neither of us have been.

I think it is so important for anyone in a creative field to identify the things that inspire us... the things that move us to create better and generate new ideas. For Chris and I, that means seeking out a new adventure. Traveling to see a new culture and explore a new place. When we are inspired we are more productive, more motivated, more fruitful in our creative endeavors. I think it is so important for each of us as creatives to find what that sweet-spot is for us and make time for it every year whether it be travel, taking time to be away. It makes us better people, better artists, better husbands and wives and allows to look at the world with a new set of eyes.

We live in a society where burnout is rampant, being connected to social networking, e mail and the internet 24/7. I think it is important to stop and ask ourselves what we really want to be connected to and how we want that to manifest itself in our lives. This year I have learned a lot about balance in my life, and although I am still trying to understand how to attain it, I at least know that I NEED it in order to create well. I can't remember the last time I thought of a "genius" idea or creative concept while sitting behind my computer. It is very easy to morph into the workaholic that you never wanted to be when we do what we are passionate about for a living, but every life needs healthy balance. Just as knowing how to "power on" is extremely important, equally important, is learning how to "power off" re-charge, re-group and re-asses. That is what 3.5 weeks in Thailand is for us.... a chance to power off for a bit. Shoot for ourselves, explore, open our minds, spend quality time together... a time to be inspired.

So as this pertains to our clients, You will want to get any print orders into us no later than November 15th to ensure that they get processed before we leave. Please put it in your calendars now so that you remember we will be gone from Thanksgiving until after Christmas. We will still have our assistant/intern extraordinaire, Marissa, coming by throughout the duration of the trip to hold down the fort here, but I just wanted to give you all a heads up that one month from today we will be out of the country... "powering off" for a bit :)

Here is a frame from Lisa and Chris' wedding. It doesn't really pertain to Thailand at all, but I just liked it so I wanted to share. And what is a blog post without a photo? :) Also, if anyone has any Thailand tips/place/recommendations please let us know! Would love to hear.

i (laura) spent a month in Thailand in college and it was fantastic. Make sure to check out Chiang Mai (northern part of the country) ... it's an incredible city. Enjoy your trip and soak it all up. Ben and I took a 3 week vacation last September to Europe and it was exactly what we needed to re-energize ourselves after a crazy year. Cheers and God Bless!

Liene Stevens says: Saturday, October 31, 2009, 12:02 PM

So so much to do and see there, you will love it. That area of the world is one of my favorite places on the planet - a little jealous that my calendar in a month does not include trips to Thailand. : )

Kirstie says: Friday, October 30, 2009, 01:55 PM

Thank you for your inspiring words. I too recognize a need to find more of a balance. I too know I need it and I am working on attaining it. You are so right I have never had an inspiring idea sitting at my desk. I went for a bike ride with my husband the other night and I instantly came up with a creative solution as soon as we hit the road. Answering that one more e-mail, processing that one last photo is so easy to do when you absolutely love what you do but it is important to step away. Thank you for the reminder. I love the way you write.

Jessica Mooney says: Friday, October 30, 2009, 01:55 AM

Great thoughts! I agree completely in stepping away from the computer.
I spent exactly 3.5 weeks in Thailand once and was thoroughly re-energized.
If you're near Hua Hin on the Southern end, you can rent mopeds and cruise through Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. It's like Arizona with it's rocks...but Thai-like with the beautiful ocean a few km away! And then if you're sore from exploring, foot massages are basically $5 an hour all over the country. Ride an elephant and enjoy the people there...they are genuinely sweet.

If you're going to be in Bangkok, Chatuchak Weekend Market (aka JJ Market) at Mo Chit is a true adventure and a unique shopping experience. My favorite market in the entire world! DON'T MISS IT. :)

So excited for you both! Doing it for that length of time is definitely worth it. Robin & I recently got away to the coast and it took us two days to truly de-coil. Can't wait to see what you make out of it.

I spent all of February in Northern Thailand with a girlfriend of mine. We did a story on a ministry called House of Grace that started out in 1987 doing prostitute rescue and now works on the preventative side of things, saving girls in danger of being sold into human trafficking. We hope that our book, telling the story of the ministry and of individual girls there, will be published sometime next year.

All that said... I LOVE THAILAND. You will love it, I think. I've been several places around the world (I'm love freelance missions photojournalism), and Thailand is my favorite place. Can't wait to see your shots from that amazing place!!!

P.S.— If you want to check out our work and progress, visit our Thailand blog: restoringgraceproject.blogspot.com

You will LOVE Thailand. It's such a special place, everyone that leaves it leaves inspired. Definitely go to Chiang Mai, visit Doi Suthup while you're there, and an elephant sanctuary. I feel like most things are best when discovered on your own, so I'll hold myself back from mentioning every little thing I can think of!
Enjoy every second! Take a tuk tuk at least once, and eat a banana pancake on the street for me!

There is a photographer out of San Diego that just took a trip there - and I don't think it was his first. Bobby Earle. http://bobbyearle.blogspot.com/

What a better way to start your day than with a little Mad Men!? Lisa & her family used that fabulous little show as the inspiration behind the styling and feel of their family shoot with us. The 1960's was a unique and fascinating time for fashion. I love the pencil skirts and pouf-style dresses from that era... they look so elegant and feminine. And those dapper three piece suits and sexy hats for the guys?! oh my, make me melt!

I love it when people take the initiative and want to do something a little different for their sessions. It was one of the many reasons the Dunham family was so fun to photograph! We romped around little nooks and crannies of downtown Seattle in an area I had never shot before and the light was tasty-beautiful. Lisa is a stellar photographer out of Tulsa, who also shot our wedding, and was visiting some friends in Seattle. She said that the three of them hadn't ever had any photos together! So we definitely had to change that for them and I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

Also, there are quite a few things that are still on the "blog-dock" if you haven't seen your shoot/wedding/session... it is coming... and it will be well worth the wait :)

Sarah & Chris - I'm sure it's not appropriate or polite to comment on our own session but.... WE LOVE THESE IMAGES! I became a photog partly so I could always be behind the camera and NEVER in front of it. I just knew I wanted you two to shoot us b/c you would "get" us. You so did. You two were wonderful and we had a great time with you in downtown Seattle. Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful piece of our lives to have forever. Kate thinks she's darling (ok, she is) and I'm afraid Jay's head might get too big for his hat! Thanks again and many blessings to you both!
